Setting the ESA series watches

The Esa Tuning Fork watches watches employ a 3 position crown. This means the day or date can be corrected without affecting the time:

Esa 9162 (Date only)

Position I: Neutral - the crown rotates freely.
Position II: Rapid date adjustment. Can be turned either direction.
Position III: Setting the time. It is preferable to turn the hands forward, and backwards only as necessary.

a) Follow these instructions in sequence for "first time" setting:

Set The Time

1. Pull crown out to Position III when second hand reaches 60 second marker. All hands will stop after a delay of about 1 second. This is OK, as the gained second will be lost again when restarting the watch.

2. Move hands forward until date changes. (This establishes midnight.)

3. Now continue to turn hands forward until the minute hand is slightly ahead of the desired minute marker and then turn back to this marker. (If setting the watch after 12:00 noon, advance hands an additional 12 hours.)

4. When time standard being used to set watch reaches 60th second, push crown in. The watch will start after a delay of about 1 second, this will make up for the extra second gained when the watch was stopped.

Set The Date

5. Pull the crown out to Position II, and rotate in either direction until the correct date is displayed. Push the crown back in.

Note: The date will advance automatically at midnight, provided a.m. and p.m. have been established (step 2). On the first day of each month, following a month with less than 31 days, advance the date manually.

b) The following instructions are for any desired resetting of the time or the date:

To Reset The Time (once midnight has been established as above)

It is preferable to turn the hands forward, and backwards only as necessary. Exact hand synchronization may be achieved as follows:

1. Pull crown out to Position III when second hand reaches 60 second marker. All hands will stop after a delay of about 1 second. This is OK, as the gained second will be lost again when restarting the watch.

2. Turn hands until minute hand is slightly ahead of desired minute marker; then turn backward to this marker. When time standard, by which you are setting your timepiece, reaches the 60th second push crown in. The watch will start after a delay of about 1 second, this will make up for the extra second gained when the watch was stopped.

To Reset or Advance The Date

Pull the crown out to Position II. Rotate in either direction until the correct Date is displayed. Push crown back in.

Esa 9164 (Date and Date)

The Esa 9164 also has a 3 position crown as above. Its operation in Position II is slightly different:

Position I: Neutral - the crown rotates freely.
Position II: Rapid day and date adjustment. Turning the crown away from you decrements both the day and date, towards you increments the date only.
Position III: Setting the time. It is preferable to turn the hands forward, and backwards only as necessary.
